I love to learn. I love to pay it forward and teach others. When I met my 1st machine knitting teacher, mentor, and friend Karalyn Rainey – I wanted to become like her and keep this fun craft alive.
Many of the original machine knitters from the 70′ and 80’s who were amazing and smart women are getting up in age. Sadly many are no longer with us. Unless, the younger generation learn and teach others this craft will die.
Paying it forward is vital in keeping any craft alive with future generations.
For example, I have visited my parents in Utah, USA three times in the past 18 months. I actively was searching for other knitters in the Utah Valley or Salt Lake City area. Shockingly, I could not find any. Women in Utah are very creative and love doing craft so my lack of finding anyone was surprising and sad. I wanted to connect with other women during my month stays at my parents.
Thankfully, my recent trip I found a lovely lady who offered to assist a gentlemen whose mother had just died and had many knitting machines in Salt Lake City. She commented on a sales knitting machine group. I private messaged her with excitement that she lived close to my parents. I asked WHY I was having a hard time finding other machine knitters.
Her reply:
“Sherri Dumbrell sadly, there is not a knitting machine community locally. There used to be a Club in Salt Lake back in the early 2000’s that was active, but the more experienced members did not want to repeatedly deal with beginners so the Club devolved into an “exclusive” advanced knitters only group that then just turned into a lunch club once a month. Their short sightedness about not encouraging new knitters just sped up the demise of a machine knitting community in this area. I still have four machines, but havent been actively knitting for a few years. Would love to meet and talk “shop”!” – knitter in Provo Utah
During my recent trip to Utah I met up with her and shared with her online groups that are good to join and who do retreats.
